Our Purpose
This work exists to move beyond assumptions.
We aim to challenge common misconceptions about poverty and invite people into a more informed, thoughtful understanding of the systems that shape it. From there, we support individuals and groups in taking meaningful steps toward more just and responsive communities.
At the same time, the program creates paid opportunities for individuals with lived experience of poverty to lead, facilitate, and shape these conversations.
The Poverty Education Workshop
For over 20 years, our workshops have brought people together across Michigan to engage, reflect, and learn.
Each year, more than 1,000 participants take part—gaining insight through guided, role-based experiences that highlight how systems, resources, and decisions intersect.
The workshop is led by trained staff with lived experience, grounding each session in real perspective and ensuring the conversation stays connected to the communities we serve.
