Re-thinking Holiday Giving

We are entering the holiday season and everything that comes with it- traditions, family gatherings, special worship services, and the biggest season of giving of the year.  Recently our Good Food Team partnered with the Congregation Connections Team to host a Lunch ‘n Learn, focusing in on Understanding Food Access and what that looks like this time of year in particular. Historically our charitable food system has perpetuated many inequities in black and brown communities through programs, acts of “kindness”, and holiday giving (for example, food and toy drives). The intent has been good, but these activities detract from opportunities […]

Juneteenth 2021

JUNETEENTH EVENTS, RESOURCES, AND CELEBRATIONS  This week we are celebrating Juneteenth, and Access will be taking a day off to commemorate this important historical day and holiday.  “Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation â€“ which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to […]

Reflection and Statement on Antiracism and Recent Events

“… being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it.” -Amanda Gorman, 2021 Inaugural Poet As we begin Black History Month, as well pass the one year mark since Access launched our current antiracism team, we wanted to pause and reflect on our commitment to the work of antiracism as well as the events we’ve witnessed in the past month. In January we watched as our nation celebrated a time-honored tradition of the beginning of a new presidential administration. Amanda Gorman recited her inaugural poem, The Hill We Climb, […]

Black lives matter.

Black lives matter. We believe this, we stand behind this statement, and we are committed to making it true at Access of West Michigan and throughout our community. We grieve the lives lost unjustly to police brutality throughout our history, most recently Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. We recognize that there are names that have not made into our headlines and that countless lives have been lost to racism. We mourn, we feel pain, sorrow, anger, and we know we must act. As a non-profit that has […]

A Spirit of Community – A Reflection

Mary Clark-Kaiser, a monthly supporter of Access, shares a reflection on her and her husband’s support of our work and mission below. Our work is possible because of our partnerships, and we are grateful for those who decide to partner with us through financial support.  Over 10 years ago I was invited to serve on the Access Board. At that time Access was renting space at First United Methodist Church downtown. I loved being on the Board and later served as both Vice-President and President of the Board. Ever since I first starting serving on the Board, I have been […]
